iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, 48 Mxls sensor and variable geometry notch

Apple recently presented its new iPhone 14 lineup. After our detailed presentation of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models (Check out our iPhone 14 and 14 Plus news: a little more…), highlights the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max versions, presenting a serious evolution over last year’s model.

From a distance, the iPhone 14 Pro looks very similar to the iPhone 12 bringing a significant design change with its straight edges. However, if you take a closer look, this year’s batch brought its share of new ones, and not a few. It starts with the loss of the notch which makes way for two dynamic perforations – one circular, the other oval – for the front sensor.

Aware of this approach’s limited aesthetic, Apple disguised those woes with a concept it called Dynamic Island. In short, the software part of the smartphone resizes the black frame around the sensor as needed: notifications, alerts, navigation interface… As a result, the perforations become more discreet, and the aesthetic defects are transformed into ergonomics. Dodgy.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, screen

In terms of functionality, there is also something new with the “Always on” or “always on” screen. Thanks to a refresh rate capable of dropping down to 1 Hz, the lock screen is always displayed without affecting autonomy, with always accessible useful information such as time, date and widgets of your choice (calendar, weather…), a novelty especially for the new iOS16 system which recently used.

To return to this new smartphone screen, it is an Oled Super Retina XDR specimen that offers a diagonal of 6.7 inches (17 cm) on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) on the iPhone 14 Pro. the latter features a resolution of 1,179 x 2,556 pixels (460 ppi) in 19.5/9 format with support for HDR10, HDR HLG and HDR Dolby Vision technologies, and 2,000 nit peak light.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max screen benefits from a resolution of 1,290 x 2,796 pixels (460 dpi) in the 19.5/9 format with HDR10, HDR HLG, and Dolby Vision HDR technologies managed, and again a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, the processor

The device is powered by the new Hexa Core A16 Bionic processor (2 x 3.46 GHz Avalanche + 4 x 1.82 GHz Blizzard) which is etched in 4 nm and developed with the aim of optimizing performance in terms of autonomy, screen and camera. This chip is supported by 6 GB Ram and Apple graphics processor (5-Core).

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, triple photo/video sensor

There are three photo/video sensors: 48 Mpxls wide-angle lens (f/1.8, 24 mm, 1.22 µm photosite, Dual Pixel, PDAF, optical stabilization) + 12 Mpxls telephoto lens (f/2, 8.77mm, PDAF, 3x optical zoom, optical stabilization) + 12 Mpxl ultra wide angle (f/2.2, 14 mm, 1.4 µm photo site, Dual Pixel).

Therefore, for the first time Apple adopted a 48 Mxls lens, improving low light capture especially thanks to the technology of merging four pixels into one. Note in passing the possibility of saving your images in ProRAW format, which takes up space but allows you to retain as much information as possible for detailed editing possibilities. The ultra-wide-angle sensor improves macro photos (for very small objects) and Apple promises three times better performance than previous models in low light.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, selfie camera

Meanwhile, the selfie camera is also 12 Mpxls (f/1.9, 23 mm, PDAF). This new TrueDepth front camera with auto focus and larger aperture enables better shots.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, video capabilities

On the video side, you can now record up to Ultra HD 4K at 60 fps or 1080p at 240 fps; 2160p up to 60 fps or 1080p up to 120 fps on the selfie camera sensor. Namely, the iPhone 14 Pro includes a new stabilizer for Action mode, to film while moving at high speed, without shake.

iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, mass specifications

Also note, the new accident detection function, specifically car crashes. The new sensor of the iPhone 14 Pro / Pro Max can indeed detect if it is shaken like in an accident and automatically offers to ask for help. In the same vein, it’s possible to place emergency calls via satellite (US only for now), perfect if you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere. On the autonomy side, Apple promises up to 29 hours of video playback on Pro Max, 23 hours on Pro.
