“I fulfilled my dream 100% and I feel I still have some dreams”
The rhythm is so intense, I have several dates a week, about a hundred over the course of 2023. It’s amazing because these are real meetings with the public in France (1), in Belgium, in Canada. I feel the energy is getting crazier in the room.
It’s been a long way since La Nouvelle Star in 2013!

It’s been a long way since La Nouvelle Star in 2013!
It’s strange to think that it’s been ten years already! This is the first old hit in my life! I choose to make music that is nurtured by several inspirations. The road may be longer for those who don’t necessarily fit into the box, but my choices have led me to fulfill many dreams. On this first album, I bring you Canadians of Chromeo, a funk duo based in Los Angeles. I used to listen to them many times when I was in middle school. There’s also Pedro Winter, Daft’s former punk manager, a real model for me. I also invited designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac. I recorded a piece of his voice where he talks about color. I composed all the lyrics for my album. The song “Plus fort”, I wrote with Oli, from Bigflo and Oli.
Did you start music at a very young age?
Yes, at the age of 6, in elementary school, in Rion-des-Landes (40). A teacher came to play the piano. I was blown away and that day I decided that I would do this all my life. My parents enrolled me in the Rion music school which is part of the Landes Conservatory and I completed my classical piano training at Mont-de-Marsan, at the Conservatory, then several years at the South Pole branch, in the current music department. Saint-Vincent-de-Tyrosse.
In parallel with the Conservatory, I started producing music, I already had a lot of ideas in my head. I started my concerts after Borda de Dax High School. When I was 20 years old, I signed a contract with the Barclay label, now I’m on the independent label Cinq7.
Did the area of your childhood inspire you?
Before releasing my first album, I made a lot of music by the sea in Biarritz, where I wrote “La Mer à Boisson” which from this point on… The ocean inspires me, relax. My music is also filled with all the emotions that I experience on tour. The one with Angele was really crazy.
What did you learn from Angèle, whom you accompanied on her first tour?
This tour taught me to always believe in those dreams. Angele trusted me from the start. He has an inspiring story. It was a great experience.
“When I think that my grandmother Coco, from Rion-des-Landes, will read my interview in “Sud Ouest”, it makes me happy! »
How did you qualify your music?
This is very free music that uses pop, French chanson, electronic club music, funk and disco. Inspired by the “French touch” movement of electronic music. And based on somewhat unusual grooves and melodies in pieces sung in French and endowed with Anglo-Saxon inspiration. It’s a space full of fun and freedom, color and celebration. My music is made to go live. I keep writing during my tour! I do things instinctively and I like to keep things intact. In December, I did a song and a month’s clip for the Deezer platform for Christmas, I was on tour.
Artist Julien Granel loves color and fashion.

You also write articles for luxury shoe brand Louboutin?
Yes, I was passionate about fashion and, little by little, I got to know the Parisian neighborhood in which I quickly found myself. Several years ago, I composed the music for a global Christian Louboutin campaign. He had the idea to invite artists, to make clips that I played. It was a completely crazy experience for me. At that moment, I saw myself playing the piano again in my room in Rion-des-Landes, in the middle of the forest, knowing no one… It was then that I realized that progress was being made.
Do you feel like you are living your dream?
Yes, 100%. My first album came out, the halls filled, I met my audience. I still have a thousand ideas for the future and I feel like I still have a lot to do, a lot to do musically and artistically. All these paths, not the simplest ones, taught me to value the journey and not wait for it to end. I enjoy every moment. And when I think that my grandmother Coco de Rion will read my interview in “Sud Ouest”, it makes me happy!
Very young Julien Granel is already singing. Here in Rion-des-Landes.
