What place is there for art on the university scene? For the first university in the country to adopt an arts and culture policy in 2014, art is certainly not an unseen second fiddle. Recognizing its central role in the development of the university community and its society, UdeS launched its new Arts and Culture Strategy 2022-2027 on January 24, during an event punctuated by brilliant exchanges and artistic manifestations.

Music, performing arts, literature, visual arts, media, museology and heritage, cinema and audiovisual… the artistic and cultural expressions found at UdeS are much more than meets the eye.
In particular through its training programs and research groups, the cultural initiatives of its various student groups, the events, performances and exhibitions that take place on its campuses and the works that take place there, the institution places a special place in that relationship. between knowledge, art and culture. In addition to fostering the vitality of art and culture, this interaction also improves the quality of the living, working and learning environment for the entire university community.

A great passion for arts and culture, Professor Jocelyne Faucher, Vice-Chancellor for Student Life and General Secretary, points out that they act as important contributors to the development of entire communities and societies:
Art is a rich source of inspiration for developing one’s sensitivity, constantly updating one’s view of oneself and others, and contributing to the beauty of the world in all its diversity.

After revising its arts and culture policy in 2020, from which many initiatives have been undertaken, UdeS intends, with its new Strategy, to position arts and culture as a distinctive element of the UdeS experience.
To do this, it will seek to enrich its on-campus experience by democratizing access to arts and culture. In the process, the university community across UdeS’s three campuses will be able to benefit from outstanding outdoor “signature” artwork. Excited by this major styling project that gives pride to art and culture, Professor Faucher explains:
Highly visible on every campus, the work will become a unifying object and a source of pride for the university community.

The initiative has also pleased the new director of the Cultural Center, Joanne Lamoureux, who took up her post last summer. In addition to “signature” works, each campus will offer indoor and outdoor artistic journeys highlighting various art forms, which will be accompanied by informational and educational components, such as conferences and cultural mediation activities.
The idea is to awaken and make the public aware of the beauty of art and culture by prioritizing creative expression in a plurality of forms, approaches and points of view.

He added that interdisciplinary works created by members of the university community that combine various artistic forms and disciplines will also be put forward as part of the Arts and Culture Strategy. Finally, a gathering place dedicated to the practice, dissemination and promotion of arts and cultural programs on campuses will form the core of the Strategy.
In short, there is no doubt that by working in such a way as to enhance the vitality and influence of arts and culture on all its campuses, UdeS is participating in the cultural development of its community and will know their inspiration to contribute. in their own way for the beauty of the world.
