Samsung Display Launches Smartphone Screen Hinge that Can Bend 360°

Samsung is a big believer in foldable smartphones and intends to remain an innovation leader in this regard. While more and more models of this type have been announced this year, South Korea (via its Samsung Display arm) recently unveiled its most ambitious panel yet.

Called Flex In & Out, this screen can be bent 360 degrees, while the majority of content models are 180 degrees. It can therefore shut itself down, just like the Huawei Mate X. What an advantage in every day versatility.

The Verge site managed to get their hands on it and shared a picture of the slab in question.

To expand the system, it was necessary to develop a new waterdrop-shaped hinge instead of the “U-shaped” hinge currently used. A system that reduces the signs of the fold, and which will be democratized in the coming years. This rotation has the advantage: it doesn’t require second screen integration for closed use.

It is also possible that the next Galaxy Z Fold 5 will adopt it. Competitors such as Oppo and Motorola have also investigated the issue. But Samsung Displays could easily save this innovation for external customers.

Samsung redoubles efforts

This isn’t the first time Samsung Displays has explored different formats. In 2021, the company has filed various detailed patents regarding screens that fold in three. Interesting idea, as we get closer to the tablet format once unlocked. Closed, it retains the smartphone aspect at 20:9 or 21:9.

The release of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 is slated for sometime in August, and we can’t wait to see what’s new with these new models. It must be admitted that the previous iteration was a bit stingy with changes.
