Leaders Bayern Munich have been held back by Leipzig as the Bundesliga returns after a 68 day mid-season break.

Serge Gnabry hit the post and Leon Goretzka’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Bayern scored their first Bundesliga goal since the World Cup when Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting cleared Gnabry’s cross from close range.

But third-placed Leipzig rescued a point when Marcel Halstenberg pushed in from Dominik Szoboszlai’s header.

Thomas Muller nearly won the game for champions Bayern – who had won the previous 10 games – in added time but drove just wide from 20 yards.

They lead Freiburg by five points at the top of the championship. Leipzig are one point further behind.

The Bundesliga, which dissolved on November 13, is the last major European league to return after the World Cup.

Veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer made his Bayern Munich debut soon after 8.3 million euro transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Bayern’s first choice Manuel Neuer is out for the rest of the season after breaking his leg skiing following Germany’s early World Cup exit.
