why you should refrain from buying this new generation
The iPhone 14 isn’t a major update. When comparing iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 14, one wonders if skipping this new generation is not a good idea.
Apple’s keynote goes on, we can breathe… Well, not really. It’s time for analysis, to better understand the challenges of this new generation iPhone 14.
Huge gap between standard and Pro
First analysis: it’s clear that the gap between the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro has never been more important. Previously, these two iPhone lines differed on things like camera capabilities and multitasking performance, while keeping some of the core specifications the same.
This time around, Apple is widening the gap between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro by hindering any real progress on the iPhone 14. Not that it’s a bad phone, but this generational leap seems pretty small for a standard iPhone.
We’re not going to list important changes and improvements at all levels on the Pro model. After all, Apple is finally trying to offer substantial improvements over the standard model. They are now much better called “Pro” attached to them.
iPhone 13 and iPhone 14: very few changes
If we stick to the main characteristics, the changes are almost non-existent between iPhone 13 and iPhone 14.
First of all, it still benefits from a 60Hz Super Retina XDR screen, and a 60Hz refresh rate in 2022 on phones over $1,000 is a shame. There are $200 Android phones that offer 90 Hz… and even 120 Hz.
The processor is still the Apple A15 Bionic: there’s no Apple A16 Bionic in the iPhone 14s, but it benefits from last year’s iPhone 13 Pro chip. With the additional GPU cores, graphics performance should be even better. Will you notice the difference between the two Apple A13 chips? Not necessarily at this level of performance.
Finally, the camera configuration remains the same on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14: two 12-megapixel sensors with wide and ultra-wide lenses. We invented the same technology. But there is a difference, because the main camera sensor uses a lens with an aperture of f/1.5, just like the iPhone 13 Pro. This means better performance in low light.

Regarding autonomy, nothing has been publicly confirmed by Apple and never will be, as the American company remains silent about the useful capacity of the battery. Instead, you should go with the iPhone 14 Plus (6.7 inches), the newcomer that replaces the Mini version. Apple announced the iPhone with the longest battery life… up to +25% compared to the iPhone 13.

Finally, note that the design remains unchanged. We’ve always deserved it up a big notch. They have almost the same dimensions… iPhone 14 is even thicker than iPhone 13. iPhone 14 is slightly lighter.
The iPhone 14 has a bit going for it
This year, more than ever, the latest iPhones are a tough sell when comparing specs. Because of course there have been some minor iterative updates, but the list of similarities has grown much longer. Moreover, we have to count on a sizeable increase in prices this year. The reason? Inflation, but also the euro-dollar exchange rate.

What’s new for iPhone 14?
Both iPhone 14 models can detect car collisions with a redesigned accelerometer, allowing them to call for help automatically when needed. Additionally, they can now communicate with satellites in the event of an emergency or for a Locate function. However, this function is only available in the United States and Canada, moreover it is paid. They also benefit from Bluetooth 5.3, to take advantage of the new AirPods Pro 2 features.
The iPhone 14 isn’t for bargain hunters or those seeking peak performance. From our point of view, it seems more logical to go for the iPhone 13 or even the iPhone 13 Pro (depending on available stock).
