In Brazil, pro-Bolsonaro stormed into Congress

BRAZIL – Nearly two years to the day after the attack on the American Capitol, in the vicinity of the Brazilian Congress? Hundreds of pro-Bolsonaro demonstrators violently stormed this Sunday, January 8, the main places of power in Brasilia, the Congress, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Presidential Palace. It unites in the same building the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

The area near Three Powers Square has however been cordoned off by the authorities, but Bolsonarists have managed to break through the cordon. And many of the images show the crowd entering the building’s stables. Almost all wearing yellow and green or Brazilian flags, the demonstrators entered by breaking windows and causing a lot of damage around them.

Anderson Torres, Secretary of Public Safety for the Federal District, announced on Twitter that he has placed an order “immediate action to restore order in the center of Brasília”. Brazilian media clarified that Brazil’s President, Lula, was not there but south of the capital to travel.

“I have asked all members of the military police and civilian police to act decisively so that order can be restored soon. Vandalism and vandalism will be met with the full force of the law.”added Anderson Torres, also Jair Bolsonaro’s former Minister of Justice and Public Security.

“This absurd attempt to impose will by force will not work”warned the new Justice Minister Flavo Dino, on Twitter, adding: “there will be reinforcements”.

Invasion through the roof

Some of the pictures submitted shortly before on social networks, as well as by world, shows a large crowd gathering in front of the building, as well as clashes with police. Demonstrators appeared on rooftops, but also on all adjoining lawns, including at Planalto’s presidential palace.

According to Brazilian media, a police vehicle even fell into the monument’s water mirror. The area around the Congress had been cordoned off by the authorities, but Bolsonarists who refused to accept Lula’s election managed to break through the security cordon and a few dozen of them made their way up the architecturally modern rise to occupy the roof. .

This same District of Brasília includes several administrative buildings or structures related to Brazilian rule: the Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential Palace of Planalt, as you can see on the map belows.

This explosion of violence occurred a week after the inauguration of left-wing president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Jair Bolsonaro, who narrowly lost to Lula in the second round of the presidential election on Oct. 30, left Brazil at the end of the year to join the United States.
