Villareal: news and forms

Villarreal were forced to look for a new coach at the start of late October when Unai Emery quit to join the Aston Villa bench midway through the season, leaving the Yellow Submarine in seventh place after picking up five wins, three draws and three defeats. Former Barcelona coach Quique Setién took over and tried to survive. Villarreal have played nine times under their new manager.

Setién’s team got off to a bad start and suffered three successive defeats at Bilbao (0-1), Poznan (0-3, without consequence for first place in the group) then against Mallorca (0-2) at home. The yellow sub managed to raise the bar just before half-time with a 1-0 win on the lawns of Espanyol Barcelona. On his return at the end of December, Setién picked up his second win: 2-1 against Valencia. Thanks to these six points, Villarreal was able to regain the seventh point they lost before the break.

In La Liga, Villarreal needs to build on this momentum as they have only scored 17 goals in 15 matches so far, which makes them the twelfth best attack. However, with only eleven goals conceded, Setién’s side had the second-best defense behind Barca and conceded three fewer goals than their opponents last night.
