La Liga starts 2023 with day 16, which offers two real matches between the top sides: Real Madrid visit Villarreal this Saturday 7 January at 16:15 and Atletico Madrid receive Barça de Xavi on Sunday evening.
On Tuesday evening, Real started the year with an amateur cup match in Cacereño, a match which the Madrid guys won without difficulty with the B team (1-0). This weekend in La Liga, Benzema, Courtois, Modric & Co. must return to defend his title.
Villarreal are also playing in the cup this week. The yellow submarine won 5-1 at FC Cartagena’s ground. In La Liga, seventh-placed Villarreal are looking to stay in contention for the European title and will try to start the new year off with a strong result against the favourites.

Villareal: news and forms
Villarreal were forced to look for a new coach at the start of late October when Unai Emery quit to join the Aston Villa bench midway through the season, leaving the Yellow Submarine in seventh place after picking up five wins, three draws and three defeats. Former Barcelona coach Quique Setién took over and tried to survive. Villarreal have played nine times under their new manager.
Setién’s team got off to a bad start and suffered three successive defeats at Bilbao (0-1), Poznan (0-3, without consequence for first place in the group) then against Mallorca (0-2) at home. The yellow sub managed to raise the bar just before half-time with a 1-0 win on the lawns of Espanyol Barcelona. On his return at the end of December, Setién picked up his second win: 2-1 against Valencia. Thanks to these six points, Villarreal was able to regain the seventh point they lost before the break.
Villarreal’s last five matches:
V–V–V–V–V
After losing his first three matches without scoring a goal, Setién had to review his team’s attacking animation and opt for a more attacking system, switching from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3. Moreover, since the 9-0 Copa del Rey win against Santa Amalia, the attack seems to have been released. In total, Villarreal have scored 18 goals in their last four official matches.
In La Liga, Villarreal needs to build on this momentum as they have only scored 17 goals in 15 matches so far, which makes them the twelfth best attack. However, with only eleven goals conceded, Setién’s side had the second-best defense behind Barca and conceded three fewer goals than their opponents last night.
Real Madrid: news and form
In November, Real Madrid lost for the first time this season in La Liga. In the little derby derby on the lawns of Rayo Vallecano, Merengues lost 2-3, although they came back from 0-1 to turn it into a 2-1 lead. A week earlier, the people of Madrid had already missed their match by conceding 1-1 against promoted team Girona.
Following these two failed matches, Real restarted the engine. Ancelotti’s men won 2-1 against Cadiz before half-time and did not miss their return from Qatar with a 2-0 win against Real Valladolid last Saturday. The six points pocketed allowed them to catch up with Barcelona at the top of the standings. Real and Barça enter the next day with 38 points each. However, the Catalans are top of the table, as Xavi and his men have the better goal difference.
Real Madrid’s last five matches:
V–V–V–D–V
Against Cadiz and Real Valladolid, Real Madrid did win, but with pain. After their two failures against Girona and Rayo Vallecano, Real have had little more success in attack. Over those four encounters, Real took an average of 18 shots per match, scoring only 1.75 goals per match. The Merengues had major problems with accuracy and scored just 18 of 72 attempted shots (11.1% accuracy).
Good news for the White House, Karim Benzema is back after a month away from competing. The difference was immediately felt, France scored two goals against Valladolid in the 83rd and 89th minute. The Madrid guys were much more dangerous offensively and had 8 shots on target, almost as many as the previous three matches accumulated.

Although Real’s last five trips to Villarreal have ended in draws, we saw Real end that streak this weekend. With the exception of the 2-0 win over Atletico, Villareal have lost to each of their top-ranked teams (1-0 to Betis, 1-0 to Real Sociedad, 3-0 to Barça, 1-0 to Bilbao). We think it will be the same against Real.

Real have certainly scored in every game they have this season but have major problems with precision, one day it will pay off against a keeper in grace, Rulli maybe this one. With 11 and 14 goals conceded, these two teams are among the top 4 defenses in the championship. Finally, Villarreal scored few goals, which is plenty of reason to expect a goal-poor closed game.
