goodbye notch, hello always on screen
Apple held a ‘Far Out’ event last night and while launching a series of hardware products, the highlight was the iPhone 14 Pro series smartphones. Apart from the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, Apple has officially announced the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
In the first big-screen redesign since Apple introduced the iPhone X in 2017, both smartphones have new pill-shaped cutouts that replace the notch and can adjust dynamically. Both devices also feature a faster A16 Bionic chip and an “always-on display” mode.
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, calls the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max ” the most innovative line of professionals to date “. The iPhone 14 Pro will be available from 1,329 euros, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max from 1,479 euros. Both will be available for pre-order on September 9 and in stores on September 16.
Regarding smartphone design, The iPhone 14 Pro looks similar to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro. The flat-sided glass sandwich design is still relevant today. It also offers surgical-grade stainless steel and the same Ceramic Shield protective glass on the front and back as on the previous generation Pro model. On the back, it is clear that the size of the camera sensor has increased, and so has the thickness of the smartphone. Apple has kept the same premium textured finish on the new Pro models that were first introduced with the iPhone 11 Pro. Other features of the iPhone 14 Pro include IP68 dust and water resistance, which protects against ingress of water up to a depth of 6 meters for 30 minutes.
If the exterior of the iPhone 14 Pro has remained almost unchanged, the facade has undergone significant changes. The first notable change in the design of the iPhone 14 Pro models concerns the screen. While Apple will offer the usual 6.1 and 6.7-inch options, the notch is replaced with a pill-shaped cutout that will house the Face ID components and a second circular cutout for the front camera.
Apple has moved the proximity sensor behind the screen, and notifications will now pop out of the notch as animations. Apple calls this system Dynamic Island. Notifications and alerts will adapt and move around the holes, and Apple is really looking at how the system animations and uses for the new notifications.
Apple demonstrates these ways Dynamic Island will come alive and work in practice, including live activity widgets that come to life and animations and controls for music. When you swipe your finger, background tasks, such as playing music, switch to the island.
Finally the always-on screen mode
The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will both display an always-on screen which works with the new lock screen widget feature in iOS 16. It will support information like reminders, calendar events, and weather without the iPhone having to wake up to view them. There’s even a sleep state for iOS 16 wallpapers that will dim them to use less battery.
The iPhone 14 Pro model is powered by Apple’s A16 Bionic chip. Apple has emphasized power, display and camera efficiency with its new chip. The 6-core processor has 2 high-performance cores that use 20% less power and 4 efficiency cores that use one-third of competing chips.
The new A16 chip contributes to the smooth animation of functionsDynamic Islandand will also support Apple’s new camera system.
No more 12 megapixels, welcome to 48 megapixels
For the first time, iPhone went from a 12 megapixel sensor to a 48 megapixel sensor. The new main photo sensor offers improvements in low light photography, all thanks to a quadrupole sensor with an aperture of f/1.78 and a focal length of 24mm.
For most photos, the sensor will pick up 12 megapixel photos are binned to maximize light capture. It also allows Apple to crop the sensor differently to provide a true 2x zoom at a focal length of 48mm. It should produce some impressive photos, and the new sensor even improves detail in Apple’s ProRAW format.
The new ultra-wide photo sensor also offers improvements in macro photography and a 3x improvement in low light. Apple has also improved the iPhone 14’s camera flash so that it is twice as bright and responds to the focal length of the photo.
If you want to record videos, the iPhone 14 Pro models have you covered. Cinematic mode now allows shooting in 4K resolution at 30 frames per second and 4K at 24 frames per second.
Collision detection and emergency SOS via satellite
Another interesting inclusion, which has been rumored for some time, is Satellite-based emergency SOS for messaging and emergency services without cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity. This feature also allows the user’s location to be shared in Find My. It will be available in the US and Canada in November and will be free for 2 years. It is not known when it will arrive in France and other territories. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max also come with Collision Detection, as does the Apple Watch Series 8.
Features of iPhone 14 Pro series models one day battery life with up to 29 hours of video playback, up to 95 hours of audio playback, and compatible with 20W fast charging. They’re running iOS 16, which will be available to everyone on September 12. Plus, new iPhones and even old ones will get Apple Fitness+ later this fall, even without an Apple Watch. The new 2022 iPhones are also compatible with the IP68 standard.
Availability
Overall, the iPhone 14 Pro offers a lot more this year than the modest upgrades made to last year’s iPhone 13 Pro model, which upgraded to a 120Hz high-refresh rate ProMotion display and three new cameras.
The Apple iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max will both launch on September 16, with pre-orders starting September 9.
